What is it you do for a living? (Parenting, volunteering, CEO of social service organization, etc.)
I am a keynote speaker and award-winning author on compassion fatigue, moral injury and vicarious trauma. I motivate audiences to build career resilience through the lens of vicarious trauma-informed care. My programs help professionals manage chronic workplace stressors. I have presented to over 1,000 organizations since 1991. As a Board-Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress and Diplomate with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, I give audiences practical wellness strategies. I received a BS in psychology and a MA in community health, with a concentration in thanatology.
I am the co-author of Living Blue: Helping law enforcement officers and their families survive and thrive from recruitment to retirement. I am the author of, But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: Helping Families After a Suicide (3ed). (2020), and the 30-hour CE course for Nurses, Loss, Grief, and Bereavement: Helping Individuals Cope (1ed, 2ed, 3ed, 4ed.). I co-authored the Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime Training Curriculum (OVCTTAC), Compassion Fatigue. I am a contributing writer to Thin Threads: Grief and Renewal; Fresh Grief; Coaching for Results; and Keys to a Good Life. You have seen my work in Good Housekeeping, Newsweek, Family Circle, Health, Shape, FOX Business, TODAY, and others.
Three weeks prior to giving birth, my father, a retired police officer, died by suicide. My story of managing traumatic loss was featured in the Emmy award winning documentary, Fatal Mistakes: Families Shattered by Suicide. My keynotes and trainings on resilience and employee retention, work-life balance and self-care, are a perfect blend of humor and evidence-based practices.

What organization(s) do you volunteer or work for?
I am the Director of the Griefwork Center, Inc. For over 25 years, I have been presenting dynamic and fun programs at conferences. Attendees of my programs work in law enforcement, healthcare, mental health, victim services, and school systems. My topics are related to Vicarious Trauma Informed Organizations and Fostering Resilience in Human Service Professionals.
What is your interest in PACEs and resilience science?
My interractive programs focus on building personal resilience in human service professionals who are experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue.
