By Sheilamary Koch, Multibriefs: Exclusive, July 27, 2020 When Christina Bethell was little, she lived in a low-income housing complex in Los Angeles where her neighbor, a quiet lady the kids called Mrs. Raccoon, always had her door open for the neighborhood kids. Every Saturday she threw a little tea party with candy to celebrate any child with a birthday that week. The school district of Broward County, Florida has 250k kids & 250 schools - we have contracted for "suicide evaluations" of "selected" students. This is preposterous. Can and WILL PACEs please offer to provide the PACE tests and to provide a post-test evaluation and follow-up to my school district of 250K students and 15k teachers as part of a "suicide evaluation?" Consider it, please? Let me explain... Truthfully, it is the district's double-speak way of saying it wants to sick the...

Re: Webinar: School Mental Health - From Implementing ➜ Funding (Moved to Jul 7th)!
Hello All, We've (school district of Broward County, FL) approved & contracted for "suicide evaluations" of "selected" students. Is this correct? I have not seen the suicide-evaluations but I have sat through the full yearly psychology presentation and the PD, professional development so teachers can better identify (target) children at risk (of being a problem in the future). I came away from these experiences convinced that district "solutions" like these are a big part of the problem.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Literacy in Schools
Building SEL and MHL are both critical to improving school mental health. According to recent discussions with thought-leaders at PBIS, it is recommended that SEL is integrated following school mental health and school wide positive behavior supports (Weist et al, 2018). We are missing the boat if we are excluding Mental Health Literacy (MHL) and mental health education training.

Schroeder, who now works as the president of the nonprofit Communities in Schools, recalls the time a decade ago when she worked in a public school in New Orleans East. Knowing Better
In 2007, at the start of my son’s fourth grade year, the teacher who I will call Ms. L, gave the class an assignment. They were to write letters to their “future selves” outlining the things they envisioned and hoped for over the course of the coming year. Ms. L. would give the letters back to the children at the end of the year so they could see how their “future selves” aligned with the vision they held at the start of the year. Though my son, ten at the time, showed no outward signs of...

What Children Really Need Is Adults That Understand Development
The brain doesn’t fully develop until about the age of 25. This fact is sometimes quite surprising and eye opening to most adults. It can also be somewhat overwhelming for new parents and professionals who are interacting with babies and young children every day, to contemplate. It is essential to realize however, that the greatest time of development occurs in the years prior to kindergarten. And even more critical to understand is that by age three 85 percent of the core structures of the...

This article really touched me because it emphasizes how important it is to recognize mental health issues early, even in children who seem happy and well-adjusted. It's scary to think how much pain can go unnoticed due to a lack of awareness or understanding. For example using resources such as...

Dr. Murthy has hit upon a profound and deeply meaningful, but somewhat unappreciated aspect of our culture and "modern" life. The citizens of the United States have been insensitive to their loss of community because, like the air we breathe, "community" is invisible until it is disturbed. The long collective history of the United States is infused with the vaunted values of freedom, liberty, individual autonomy, equality, and democracy, etc. This is the story we tell ourselves, but it is...
